It has begun

In an earlier post I made a guess of how the Republicans will INSIST that gay marriage come up for a vote this year.  Sadly, I was pretty close.  Here’s the Republican leader Senator McKinley:

Though the court has made their decision, I believe every Iowan should have a voice on this matter and that is why the Iowa Legislature should immediately act to pass a Constitutional Amendment that protects traditional marriage, keeps it as a sacred bond only between one man and one woman and gives every Iowan a chance to have their say through a vote of the people.

Denise (commenting below) is right.  I should allow time to savor the victory.  Ann said I’m making lemons of lemonade.  I hope they are both right.  My gut tells me this is a gold plated winning issue for Republicans in the next election.

If California couldn’t pass gay marriage in November 2008 there’s no reason to think Iowa will in November 2010.

As my friend Rob would say, “So Steve, who pissed in your Cheerios?”

  1. Actually Steve, I disagree. I think that Prop 8 infuriated a LOT of Americans - and a lot of Iowans. While this may incite the Republicans, I think it will incite the Democrats and young people who are for gay marriage.

I actually think my husband's whole family will get behind this issue - and most of them live in Iowa. If young people who live in Iowa City start spreading out and campaigning across the whole state - who KNOWS what can be done? I think Iowans will learn a lesson from California and do better because of it. And heck, won't you be back in two years to help?
