The elephant driver used his feet to steer and accelerate. If he wanted the elephant to turn he'd push on the side he wanted to turn towards. If he wanted to accelerate he'd push on both sides.

Nepal Day 6 - Driving an elephant
The elephant driver used his feet to steer and accelerate. If he wanted the elephant to turn he'd push on the side he wanted to turn towards. If he wanted to accelerate he'd push on both sides.
