I took this picture from my balcony. This compound is six buildings with four apartments each. My neighbors will be the people who were screwed last fall and put into our tiny, poorly constructed apartments. Basically, the University is making it up to us by giving us very nice housing now. (As a single person I don't qualify for a three bedroom, but I got one.) I am fortunate to get an upstairs apartment. The compound is walled off so those on the first floor have a view of a wall out their window. Plus, see those steps? They lead to a grand doorway that opens up into the first floor people's living room. Whereas I have windows and a sliding glass door to my balcony along my living room, these guys get one window and a totally useless ornate door. (The door they'll actually use to enter their apartment is a side door next to it.)
That's pretty common here. Let's build something pretty, ornate, totally useless and, well, it would be better to simply have a window.

Compound here means compound: Walls all the way around. A gate to open like a garage door and a buzzer in my apartment to allow guests in. Plus, in the land of cheap labor, watchmen monitoring the gate 24 hours a day.
