At tonight's forum the economist explaining "Why study economics" gave an answer I've never heard in the US. Paraprasing: "Why do we need economics? Economics is about the welfare of society. How can we have a better life? How can the government help us have a better life?"
In his ten minute presentation he never once referred to allocating scarce resources (the way economics is viewed in the US).
I know this is inside geek stuff, but it really is a fundamentally different way of viewing the role of government in society.
lol - How the Gov't can best utilize our resources huh? Maybe we should mandate annual economics classes or credits be obtained to for some of our fellow officials to remain in office. But then again, their toughest choice through the course of a day isn't usually "how do I get my kickboxing workout in and still make the community forum" like mine... So I got nothing.
