Quote of the day - Women in the kitchen

Tonight there was a forum for freshmen women. Five of my colleagues and I presented "Why you should major in _______" with me representing the Management degree. Around 200 women attended. Keep in mind, at this university the sexes are separated. The only six males in the room were the six professors presenting.

One of my colleagues explained the need to study economics. During his presentation he said:
"After you get your degree 50% of you will end up in the kitchen."
I gasped. The women, however, were not offended; they giggled.

  1. I think it is a very good thing that I was not in the room. I probably would have gotten shot after I decked the guy... Okay, it would depend on how big he was - but still... I would not do well in that country. My question is - how does Ann deal with comments like that?

  2. Yeah, I'm not sure I would handle that well myself. Probably another reason why I shouldn't come visit you, Steve. I probably really would start an international incident.

And how does Ann deal with it?

  3. Annie asked me today what you taught. I told her and explained what it entailed. She said it sounded boring. I said it was probably interesting, perhaps with lots of case studies of specific companies and how they operate. She said, "Oh. I bet I know what company he talks about."
