The fine sand that drifts in the air makes it necessary to have your car washed every week or two. At one of the malls Pakistani's go around with a bucket of water and towels. Pay them $2.50 and when you return your car is shining clean.
One of my colleagues decided to wash his car on his own. He used a hose and washed it off. While he was doing it the police stopped and gave him a ticket. Apparently it's OK to wash with a bucket, but not with a hose. The ticket was $55.
He couldn't simply pay the fine. He had to show up at court. On his court day he arrived at 8AM... with five hundred other people. There was no order; names were called randomly. While he was sitting there he crossed his legs. The judge stopped what he was doing and yelled at him. Apparently a raised foot is a sign of disrespect.
By 3:30 he was finally called. As he went before the judge the clerk told him to simply say he was sorry. The judge asked him why he washed his car. My colleaugue began to answer. The judge was furious. He was supposed to simply say he was sorry. No explanation.
The judge upheld the $55 fine for washing the car.
He tacked on $55 for crossing his legs.
And he tacked on $55 for taking up the court's time instead of simply saying sorry.
$165 in fines because he washed his car using a hose.
