We hired a private driver to take us from Katmandu to Chitwan. It was a trip along winding mountain roads. In many places the road had washed out during the summer monsoon and had not been repaired. The trip was mostly downhill as Katmandu is over 4000 feet and Chitwan is about 200 feet. The driver and his friend drove us for five hours, turned around and drove back. Total cost: $75 including tip.
Much of the mountain sides have been terraced and rice is the primary crop. Travelling along in December (long after the rice has been harvested) the sides of the mountains have interesting rings.
Another picture of the terracing. Much of the time the mountains were obscured by haze. The mountains along Katmandu are soft rolling mountains like the Allegheny's in the US. The Himalaya's with the sharp peeks are to the north.
In October and November Nepal has some of the best white water rafting in the world. I look forward to a future trip to do this...
Halfway down we stopped to eat. Here's a picture of a local woman carrying... hmmm... not sure what...
This is an open food market. Here we experienced fresh bananas (very good) and oranges that were exceptional. I've had fresh oranges in southern Texas. Of course they taste better than the ones we get in the store... but the Nepali oranges were much smaller (almost nectarine size) and unbelievably good.
This is the Chitwan valley shortly before we arrived at our hotel.
