I work at a university where attendance is taken seriously - four absences in a class and you are kicked out* - but the application of that rule vary greatly. I've found a comfortable spot.

First approach: Student is in class on time (or within five minutes)

Interesting. I posted this on Thursday. Today it says I posted it on Friday and deleted most of the post. Odd.

Suffice to say I use attendance on time as participation points in my classes. At the end of the semester those that came late all semester are very upset at my "unfair" rule.
