12 things that became obsolete in the past decade

Most of the list is predictable:
  1. Cameras with print film
  2. Catalogs
  3. Fax machines
  4. Handwritten letters
  5. Classified section of newspapers
  6. Dial-up internet
  7. CD's
  8. Encyclopedias
  9. Calling
  10. Land-line phones
  11. wires
I'm not sure I agree with 11. I have more wires around my desk now than ever.

And the 12th obsolete item?

I feel for my friends at Yellow Book. Most worked for McLeod USA. They've had enough of going down with a sinking ship.

  1. Hey now, I work at Yellowbook and they assure us that there is a bright future :o) (we'll see...)

  2. I hope you have a bright future, too. Although I'm not sure I know who you are!

Unlike McLeod, it should be easy for YB to measure growth/decline.

And, for what it's worth, the YB IPhone application is the top free app in the Emirates. So if your company is moving ahead with the times it will have a bright future!

  3. I am not sure where you got this list, but #s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 are certainly not "obsolete" by any means. Perhaps they are on their way, but they are definitely NOT obsolete as of today's date.

  4. As a fellow Yellowookian (yep, just made that up)......the company has recognized the print decline for the past decade and is actually very well positionined for the online world.
So I certainly agree with the forecast for the printed directories.....although they will be around until the day we die, but I think you'll see YB as a major player in the online world....starting......right now.

Happy New Year, by the way.

  5. I just bought a fax machine (well, one of those all-in-ones with copier, scanner, printer) because I am being asked to fax a TON of paperwork to try to take care of things for my mom. Since it costs $1.50 for the first page and $2.00 for each page thereafter - I thought spending $80 at one shot was better (and I don't have to drive anywhere in this bitter cold to get to a fax). So, I disagree that fax machines are obsolete yet! Or maybe it's just wishful thinking... I guess I can still use the copier, scanner and printer if the fax becomes obsolete! : )

  6. People! The list is not MINE. There's a link at the top of the post showing where it came from. I wish the best for Yellowbook... fax machines, not so much.

  7. I didn't think it was your list - just stating that I disagreed with it. I'm not terribly fond of faxes either - but the insurance companies keep insisting I use them! And it expedites matters too - rather than wait for the mail to deliver something that might take a week - they can get the info in minutes. NOT that it will help in terms of THEIR processing time...

And I thought you WANTED me to comment on your blog? : )
