Are you serious?

Students average 60-70% on my tests/quizzes.  I build in "easy" points by having them do a personality test.  It's worth 10% of their total grade and getting the points is this easy:
  • Show up on the day we do the personality test.
  • Write two paragraphs.  The first paragraph should discuss the results and whether you agree with them.  The second paragraph should highlight what careers interest you that match your personality type.  I don't grade your writing skills but it must be written by you.  If it is copied and pasted you will get a zero.
Today several students showed me their work, ahem, what they claim is their work.  What's hilarious is even when I called them out, "You didn't write this" they don't back down.

"Yes, sir, I did!"

Oh, really?
"Whether you’re a young adult trying to find your place in the world, or a not-so- young adult trying to find out if you’re moving along the right, it’s important to understand yourself and the personality traits which will impact your likeliness to succeed or fail at various careers."
A student e-mailed this to me and asked me to review "his work" before he turned it in.  I replied, "It's a good thing you didn't hand this in, because it would get a zero."

I'm not close to going postal but the "I'm going to cheat and lie to your face about it" mentality is getting to me.

  1. It is nice to see your much more "bad ass" attitude about it! I wonder if this is a cultural thing and you would run into this kind of behavior all over the middle east, or if this is a "rich, spoiled brat, entitlement" thing and you are running into it because you have a bunch of Paris Hiltons and Nicole Ritchies in your class.

  2. I'm not getting walked on *quite* as much as I used to... I call the Paris Hilton wannabees "fashionistas." In dealing with them I find myself saying, "Oh, honey, I'm so sorry..."
