Freaky looking guy explained

During the trip to Nepal I wondered what's up with these dudes:
Today I learned that in Hinduism there is many paths to heaven (nirvana?). One is the path of doing drugs and finding enlightenment.

Hmm. I am surprised this hasn't caught on in the US.

    OK I took a course in Hinduism with Dr. Hay, and there certainly was nothing in that semester-long course that referred to drugs.
